Houston winters are mild — until they aren't. A hard freeze can arrive fast and catch homeowners off guard, and the damage (burst pipes especially) is expensive and preventable. A little preparation goes a long way. Here's what to do before the temperature drops.

1. Insulate and drip your pipes

Wrap exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or heating tape to prevent freezing and bursting. When a freeze is forecast, let faucets drip slowly to relieve pressure in the lines.

2. Open cabinet doors

Open the cabinet doors under sinks (especially on exterior walls) so warm air from the home can reach the pipes.

3. Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets

Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor spigots with faucet covers — outdoor faucets are among the first to freeze and split.

4. Seal drafts and openings

Check doors, windows, and other openings for drafts. Add weather stripping or caulk to seal gaps, and use door sweeps to keep cold air from seeping in.

5. Hold a steady thermostat

Keep your thermostat set to a consistent temperature, even when you're away, to avoid sudden drops that can freeze pipes.

6. Know where your main water shutoff is

If a pipe does burst, shutting off the water fast limits the damage. Locate your main shutoff valve now, before you need it in a hurry.

7. Stock emergency supplies

Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, phone chargers, and non-perishable food on hand in case of power outages.

8. Stay informed and have a plan

Follow local forecasts and guidance, and have a simple family plan for communication and, if ever needed, evacuation. Check on elderly neighbors, too.

Taking these steps can dramatically reduce the risk of freeze damage. If you'd like a printable home-prep checklist — or you're buying a home and want to understand its winter readiness — reach out anytime.
